About the walk

You will enter Tallinn Old Town through Viru Gates and walk through Lower Town, from the merchants' Pikk Street to Town Hall Square. Then the route climbs along the western fortifications to Toompea and ends above the tiled roofs.

Along the way, medieval Tallinn will gradually stop looking like a ready-made backdrop. Behind the facades lie city council decisions, merchants' rules, military calculations, and architects' work. You will find out why loyalty to a brotherhood could cost someone the right to brew beer, what made young men stay below while a spire caught fire, and how a shoemaker ended up commanding a tower garrison.

The story draws on contracts, court records, and visible traces in stone; disputed accounts remain just that. By the end, you will read Tallinn's skyline as the result of specific decisions—from the passage between two towers to the rules used at Kohtuotsa Viewing Platform to assess new roofs.

Why this order

Viru Gates mark the entrance to Lower Town, while the spire of St. Olaf's Church leads toward its northern side, closer to the old road from the harbor. From the church, the route returns south along Pikk Street, following the former flow of goods—so the next stop is the hall of the main merchants' corporation. A short passage from the Great Guild to Town Hall Pharmacy shifts the story from merchants' power to the city council's duty to provide residents with medicines; stepping out onto the square immediately reveals Tallinn Town Hall as the center of market and justice. Then the route crosses the boundary of the peaceful city: from Tallinn Town Hall, it leads to the tower that defended this order from outside. Kiek in de Kök stands at the start of the climb to Toompea, so after the fortifications comes the castle of the upper town. Kohtuotsa Viewing Platform completes the sequence with the wider view: below lie the streets, spires, and roofs of all the Lower Town you have just walked through.

Good for

Those discovering Tallinn Old Town for the first time Those who care about human decisions rather than a list of styles Those who want to connect Lower Town and Toompea in one walk

Worth noting

Those looking for a route focused only on church interiors Those who prefer a walk without the climb to Toompea Those who want a light overview without legal and military stories

Before you go

Decide in advance whether you want to follow only the outdoor route or go inside the sites: the Great Guild museum, St. Olaf's Church, Kiek in de Kök, and Toompea Castle each require extra time, and access may depend on the season, events, and advance booking. A visit to Riigikogu must be booked separately; there is no free entry to the castle or regular access to Tall Hermann Tower. The climb up the tower at St. Olaf's Church involves a steep staircase. The fortifications section includes stairs and tight spaces. Wear non-slip shoes and bring clothing for the wind: it feels stronger on the hill and at the viewing platform.

When to go

Allow about two and a half hours for the outdoor route with stops and listening. One museum visit or a tower climb will noticeably lengthen the walk; several interiors can turn it into a program of about four hours.

Backup plan

If the museums, towers, or parliament are unavailable, do not reroute: all 8 stories can be read from outside. At Viru Gates, work with the empty space left by the vanished passage; on the square, with the spire and cobblestones; at the pharmacy and guild, with the facades and portals. St. Olaf's Church and Kiek in de Kök still work as outdoor landmarks, while at the castle, the square, towers, and flag are enough. In rain, shorten pauses in open places and spend more time under cover and near facades. If Kohtuotsa Viewing Platform is crowded or slippery, do not go right to the edge: you can take in the final panorama from a safe part of the platform.
