About the walk

You will begin in Zavelichye, opposite Pskov Krom. At the start, the fortress will be visible in full: the promontory between the Velikaya River and the Pskova River, its walls, towers, and cathedral rising above them.

Then you will cross the river. The wide view will narrow to gates and a defensive passage. Beyond them come the square by Trinity Cathedral, the stone outlines of Dovmont Town, and the rooms of a border chancellery. Farther on, the road turns toward the towers by the water and ends on the other bank of the Pskova River, opposite the empty span of the Lower Grilles.

This is not a survey of churches or a catalog of fortress details. The stories follow the fates of things: a cross beside a new chapel, a mosaic older than the present gates, a vanished bell, and a copper bird after a fire. Legend will remain legend, and rebuilt masonry will not be passed off as medieval.

By the end, you will be able to point out where Pskov's common bell gave way to an administrative room, and the city's gates to a river barrier.

Why this order

The start in Zavelichye is there so you can first see the whole promontory between two rivers; after crossing the Velikaya River, that broad view narrows to the Great Gates and the defensive passage. The gates lead specifically to Trinity Cathedral because they protected the road to the square, the bell, and the city's documents. South of the cathedral, the uncovered foundations of Dovmont Town show the princely, judicial, and church buildings that surrounded the center of decision-making. Beside them, the Prikaz Chamber continues the same theme after Veche Square disappeared: in place of the square came rooms, an archive, and the sovereign's seal. From the chamber, the road reaches Vlasyevskaya Tower, where governing the city met the crossing and the trading entrance. The route then follows the fortifications to Flat Tower: after the land gates, the entrance by river comes into view. Crossing to the opposite bank, to High Tower, is essential for the finale—only from there does the empty span between the two towers read as the site of the Lower Grilles and the last assault.

Good for

Those who want to understand the workings of the Pskov Republic through specific places Lovers of fortresses, restoration, and archaeology Those interested in what happens to things after destruction and rebuilding

Worth noting

Those looking mainly for a walk through church interiors Those content with a general loop around the Kremlin walls Those who dislike historical stories about power, sieges, and restoration

Before you go

The route stays outdoors and does not depend entirely on museum interiors, but it is best to check separately whether the Prikaz Chamber and the towers are open before your walk. Trinity Cathedral remains an active church: during a service, listen to the story in the square or through headphones, and do not linger by the entrance. Much of the route is exposed to wind from the rivers, so choose your clothes for the weather rather than the temperature in the city center. Charge your phone and bring headphones: by the water and in open squares, a voice from a speaker is easily lost.

When to go

Go in daylight: it is easier to make out Pskov Krom from Zavelichye, the plans of the excavated churches, and the positions of the towers at the mouth. If you want to combine the walk with museum rooms, begin after checking whether they are accessible; for a fully outdoor route, the time when slanting light picks out the walls and the current is especially vivid.

Backup plan

If the interior spaces are closed, keep the full order of stops. At the Prikaz Chamber, study the facade and barred windows; at Vlasyevskaya Tower, the position of the gates in relation to the river and the former crossing; and at Flat Tower and High Tower, the open gap above the water where the vanished barrier once worked. Do not try to replace closed interiors by rushing: give the freed-up time to Dovmont Town, whose overall layout unfolds outside, and to the finale at the mouth. It is the relationship between the monuments, not the museum displays, that carries the route's main idea.

  1. 1

    Olga's Chapel

The starting point offers an overall view of the fortress promontory and introduces the theme of lost and restored city landmarks.
  2. 2

    Great Gates and Trinity Tower

Here the route moves from the fortress’s overall silhouette to a passage designed to hold up those who entered.
  3. 3

    Trinity Cathedral and Veche Square

This stop connects the main church with the place where the city’s documents were kept and where the veche was assembled for the last time.
  4. 4

    Dovmont Town

The exposed foundations will show how tightly packed the princely, judicial, and ecclesiastical quarter by the Pskov Krom was.
  5. 5

    Prikaz Chamber

After Veche Square, another form of government appears here—with an archive, a seal, departments, and the voivode's chamber.
  6. 6

    Vlasyevskaya Tower

The tower will link fortress defense with everyday movement across the bridge, trade, and the work of modern restorers.
  7. 7

Flat Tower and the mouth of the Pskova River

Here, the restored tower marks one end of a vanished barrier across the river entrance.
  8. 8

    High Tower and Lower Grilles

The final point will reconstruct, from the two towers and the open span, the site of the river barrier that stopped the assault.
