About the walk
Start in the garden at the foot of Guia Hill, climb above the treetops, and reach the fortress, chapel, and lighthouse. Then the road descends to paved Tap Seac Square and enters the St. Lazarus District—former homes, a shelter, and small exhibition spaces.
This is a walk about changing purposes. The park has kept the name of a destroyed palace. The short cable car asks a question: why did a ride lasting only a few moments once require nearly a year of waiting? At the gallery, you will find two wells that were left in place during renovation. In the neighboring courtyard, former residents will open an exhibition about their own lives.
The story follows turns like these: who saved a place, what was left in view, and why people came back here. By the end of the walk, you will be able to explain how Flora Garden, Guia Hill, and the St. Lazarus District are linked by one road of change.
Why this order
First, in Flora Garden, you will see what remains after an earlier residence disappeared. Then you will take the Guia Cable Car, because it continues the same climb up the slope while adding a modern engineering story. From the upper station, the route leads to the fortress and lighthouse: a short urban device gives way to an old system for watching the sea.
After the closed-off military hilltop, you will descend to Tap Seac Square, where local people turned another open area into a shared space. From the square, you will go straight into the gallery, where exhibitions occupy a former private home. Next comes Albergue SCM—after the family mansion, a former shelter also given over to artists. Then you will continue to neighboring 10 Fantasia, where support was directed toward young artists and their first exhibitions. At the end, you will climb to St. Lazarus Church: its name explains the name of the whole district and takes the route from today’s studios back to the earliest shelter here.
Those interested in buildings with several lives Those who want to combine a climb up Guia Hill with a walk through a creative district Those who prefer specific city stories to an overview of architectural styles
Those expecting a level route without changes in elevation Those looking for a walk through casinos and waterfronts Those uninterested in small galleries and courtyards
Before you go
Wear shoes with a secure grip: the hill has steps and inclines, and surfaces can be slippery after rain. Bring water and sun protection—a substantial part of the route is outdoors. Before setting out, check the status of the Guia Cable Car: it stops for strong winds, technical work, and unfavorable weather. Also check the current programs at Tap Seac Gallery and 10 Fantasia, since access inside depends on exhibitions and events. The church remains active, so worship takes priority over sightseeing. Save the map in advance: after the descent, you will pass through several nearby streets that are not always obviously connected.
When to go
Choose a cooler part of the day and leave enough daylight for the descent. Do not rush on the hilltop, but do not expect galleries or cultural venues to stay open late into the evening. In hot or humid weather, short breaks in the garden and on the shaded streets of St. Lazarus are useful.
Backup plan
If the Guia Cable Car is not running, walk up along the park paths, matching your pace to the weather, or begin a shortened version at Tap Seac Square and follow the lower part of the route to the church. In rain, strong wind, or poor visibility, it makes sense to postpone the hilltop: the exposed parts of Guia Hill lose some of their appeal and can become uncomfortable. A closed gallery or 10 Fantasia does not end the walk—see the architecture from outside and spend more time in the square, the courtyard at Albergue SCM, and the district streets. If the church is closed or a service is underway, finish at the facade and the Cross of Hope without disturbing parishioners.
