The story of the place
At the base of Salisbury Crags, dark rock wedges beneath reddish and pale layers, crumpling them and lifting an entire block. A section here means a geological exposure—a place where the internal structure of the rocks has reached the surface. Stonecutters opened it up while quarrying durable stone for roads.
In the late eighteenth century, James Hutton was looking for just such places. He was trained as a physician but did not see patients; inherited farms and chemical production brought him money. Together with a partner, Hutton learned to make ammonium chloride from furnace soot, which dyers and metalworkers needed. The income allowed him to collect specimens and argue with university scholars for years without fear of losing a salary. At stake were his scientific reputation and a quarter-century of work.
Hutton settled opposite Salisbury Crags in seventeen seventy and regularly investigated the quarries. The influential school of geology at the time explained dark crystalline rocks as deposits from an ancient ocean: minerals supposedly precipitated from water, like salt from a solution, and built up the Earth's crust layer by layer. Hutton sought recognition for a different cause—underground heat.
This exposure gave him tangible evidence. First, sand and silt settled on the bottom of a body of water and hardened. Millions of years later, molten rock rose from below, entered between the formed layers, bent them, and partly enveloped a detached block. The melt then cooled and became dolerite. Geologists call such a solidified underground sheet a sill. Salisbury Crags are the edge of this sill, exposed by erosion and quarries; the magma did not reach the surface here or build a volcanic cone above it.
In seventeen ninety-five, Hutton set out the evidence in two volumes of Theory of the Earth. Readers received a difficult book with long arguments, while supporters of the marine theory disputed the very possibility of molten rock beneath the ground. Hutton died two years later. He did not live to see his work widely recognized.
The dispute continued on these very crags. In eighteen twenty-six, the professor of natural history Robert Jameson brought students here, among them the seventeen-year-old medical student Charles Darwin. Jameson maintained that sediment from above had filled the fissure, and mockingly mentioned people who considered the rock to be molten material that had risen from below. Darwin later recalled that after this lecture he decided never to study geology again. Five years later, he set sail on HMS Beagle and began the voyage with detailed geological research. Jameson himself also changed his position under pressure from new observations: by the early eighteen thirties, he already accepted that the rocks of Salisbury Crags had intruded here in a molten state.
The section preserves that same uplifted block of sedimentary rock, partly enveloped by dolerite, and at the boundary the melt once cooled so quickly that it left a thin fine-grained rim. Hutton's name was attached to this site because here the stone preserved his evidence.

The park is open around the clock; the northern part of Radical Road is closed, while the southern section and Hutton's Section are accessible as indicated by current Historic Environment Scotland signage.
