About the walk
You will begin at North Square of Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, where water and music draw your eye to Giant Wild Goose Pagoda. Then you will come up to the temple steps and walk from the active main hall to the seven-story tower. Beyond the temple walls, the route changes character: the bronze monk remains before the pagoda, while ahead begins the broad Datang Everbright City, with theaters, shops, and street stages. The finale is Kaiyuan Square, where the emperor stands above a procession of officials, envoys, and musicians.
The story will not dwell on “the grandeur of the Tang Dynasty,” but on the choices people made. Why is a reservoir the size of two football fields hidden beneath the square? Why did a son have to finish his father’s construction? How did a live roly-poly doll transform an entire district? The answers will appear on site, without a promotional legend and with an honest distinction between what is ancient, restored, and invented anew.
After the walk, you will be able to explain where the temple grounds end in Xi'an and the modern “city without night” begins.
Why this order
North Square of Giant Wild Goose Pagoda is the starting point because its fountain directs your gaze toward the pagoda and shows where the district’s modern transformation began. From here, you will approach the temple steps: after the open square, the boundary of today’s Daci'en Temple becomes clear. The main hall comes before the pagoda, so you first encounter the active religious site and then its historical center. Emerging onto South Square of Giant Wild Goose Pagoda moves Xuanzang from the temple courtyard into the city’s composition. Datang Everbright City begins immediately beyond the statue, so the modern district continues that transition. A straight pedestrian street leads to Kaiyuan Square, where figures of the emperor, officials, and envoys complete the Tang Dynasty version created by the city’s residents.
Those who want to connect an ancient temple with new Xi'an Those interested in the human choices behind major landmarks Those who enjoy direct city walks with a clear change of setting
Those looking only for early Buddhist Xi'an without modern districts Those who prefer intimate lanes to broad squares Those expecting archaeological traces of the Tang Dynasty at every turn
Before you go
On the day of your walk, check the visiting rules for Daci'en Temple, access inside the pagoda, and current notices about the fountain and street performances: these parts of the route may operate independently of one another. For the temple, choose clothing and behavior appropriate to an active religious site. The route is especially striking as day turns to evening, but the squares become noticeably busier after dark; charge your phone, bring headphones, and agree in advance where to meet if your group gets separated in the crowd.
When to go
2–3 hours
Backup plan
If the fountain or performances are not running, follow the route without waiting for a show: North Square of Giant Wild Goose Pagoda still gives you a clear view of the pagoda, and Datang Everbright City remains an evening pedestrian scene. If the temple is already closed or you do not want to enter, see the pagoda from the north and south squares, listen to the temple stops from outside, and continue to the statue of Xuanzang. If the crowd is heavy, do not linger by the stage itself: keep to the edge of the pedestrian axis and finish the walk in the more spacious Kaiyuan Square.

North Square Musical Fountain
This is where the story begins of how the outskirts around the pagoda were transformed into the city’s main walking district. - 2
Entrance to Daci'en Temple
This point will show why the current entrance belongs to a later, reduced version of the monastery. - 3
Main Hall of Daci'en Temple
The hall will return the pagoda to its setting beside an active monastic community, rather than museum scenery. - 4
Giant Wild Goose Pagoda
Here you will learn what cargo the tower was built to hold and why the structure before you is no longer the first one. - 5
Statue of Xuanzang and the South Square of Giant Wild Goose Pagoda
The monument will show how the translator was brought out of monastic history and into urban space. - 6
Datang Everbright City
Here, the shift becomes visible: from stylized development to a street that keeps people there with performances. - 7
Kaiyuan Square
The finale will explain which historical era the square's creators turned into a modern stage.
