About the walk
You will begin at the gates of Charles Bridge, then turn off the Royal Route toward the wall of Maltese Garden and head down to Kampa. From there, the walk follows Devil's Stream, passes former mills, a quiet square of the order, and the busy Mostecká Street. After the close-set quarters, you will enter a grand palace garden and return to the dome of St. Nicholas Church.
Behind the postcard façades, very different scenes await. Why did a symbolic monument have to be covered with a wooden shield? Why was a house sold for the sake of one painting? What connects a Christmas tree in a small shop to a major political trial? And who would need a passage from a church crypt into a city tower?
The story unfolds through deals, court disputes, and small human choices with large consequences. Documents will be separated from city legends. By the end, you will recognize the old boundaries of Lesser Town in a paving grid, a mill canal, the order's wall, a coat of arms above a church, and a single door in a city tower.
Why this order
The towers set the theme of boundaries: this was where it was decided who could cross the bridge. Just beyond them, by the wall of Maltese Garden, you will see how authorities tried to control inscriptions and gatherings as late as the twentieth century. Then the road turns toward Kampa: first to Sova's Mills, where an old working building became home to a private collection, then back along Devil's Stream to the wheel—to the very water that created the island and became the subject of a long legal dispute. From the wheel, you will emerge onto Maltese Square and see whose commandery owned the riverbank and gave the place its name. Lázeňská Street leads back to Mostecká Street, where the ceremonial Royal Route narrows to one shop and one political case. Then Letenská Street brings you to Wallenstein Garden: after the tight commercial street, the scale of the palace reveals the size of a fortune amassed during the war. At St. Nicholas Church, the route ends at one last boundary—between the order's church and the city tower.
Those who want to see Lesser Town as more than Charles Bridge Lovers of urban conflict, courtroom stories, and private choices with major consequences Those who value specific details of buildings and streets
Those looking only for a quick overview of Prague's best-known postcard sights Those expecting mainly interiors and museum collections Those who dislike retracing part of their route across Kampa
Before you go
Allow time not only for walking, but for lingering over the façades, canal, and garden. The towers, Museum Kampa, and the interior of St. Nicholas Church are separate visits: decide in advance whether you want to add them to the outdoor walk, and check current access conditions on their official websites. Wallenstein Garden operates seasonally and is sometimes unavailable because of events. On Mostecká Street and Lesser Town Square, watch carefully for dense foot traffic, trams, and vehicles; by Devil's Stream, do not block the narrow footbridges and passageways.
When to go
3–3.5 hours
Backup plan
If Wallenstein Garden is closed, explore the palace quarter from the accessible streets and continue to Lesser Town Square: the main logic of the walk remains intact, though the grotto and sculptures will be missed. In rain, spend less time by the canal and shift the main part of the visit to separately open museum or church interiors, checking admission in advance. If a tower or Museum Kampa is unavailable, do not wait for it to open: their role in the story is clear from outside, and the time saved is better left for Kampa and the final square.
