The story of the place

Text size

Above Kneiphof, between the two branches of the Pregolya, runs a high road for cars. Its carriageway is supported by a row of concrete pillars, so traffic crosses the island without reaching its ground. Green Bridge and Shop Bridge once stood on this route; after they were dismantled, the island can be reached from the crossing only on foot, by stairways.

In the early nineteen sixties, Kaliningrad's chief architect, Vladimir Khodakovsky, proposed routing the future overpass farther downstream along the Pregolya, extending Serpukhovskaya Street with it. The main flow of cars would then have bypassed Kneiphof to the west. Khodakovsky planned to reconstruct Green Bridge and Shop Bridge along Leninsky Prospekt, while turning the prospekt itself into a shopping street and pedestrian boulevard with restricted traffic.

For Khodakovsky, this was a professional risk. Since nineteen sixty-one, he had been responsible for the architectural future of all Kaliningrad and had sought to have new buildings stand alongside the surviving parts of Königsberg. The party leadership demanded a radical reconstruction of the center. The conflict ended in nineteen sixty-five, when Khodakovsky lost his post as chief architect and continued working as an ordinary designer at Voyenmorproekt Institute.

The very next year, members of the regional executive committee approved a different route: along Leninsky Prospekt, across both branches of the Pregolya and directly over the island. Builders dismantled Green Bridge and Shop Bridge. On November fifth, nineteen seventy-two, they opened a long elevated highway on concrete supports. For cars, it passes over Kneiphof without an exit: the island can be reached only by pedestrian stairways.

Under the spans that Khodakovsky had proposed moving beyond the island, another stage of this story appeared half a century later. Grigory Khutsiev, director of Königsberg Cathedral, wanted to provide a place for local performers who found it difficult to get into the cathedral's prestigious concert hall. His staff installed a screen, a stage, lighting, and sound equipment beneath the bridge. On April twenty-fifth, two thousand twenty-five, Cultural Place opened here, a venue for concerts, film screenings, and lectures with free admission. After the spring fair, the organizers did not dismantle it: performances and screenings continue here in summer, while exhibitions remain throughout the year.

Above, cars travel along the route that Khodakovsky tried to divert away from Kneiphof. Below, Kaliningrad musicians are given a stage that could not be found for them at Königsberg Cathedral.
