The story of the place

Text size

The main building and three former prison buildings form the courtyard that now houses the Museum of Sviyazhsk History. It was built in the eighteen thirties for the uyezd administration: the main building contained judicial and administrative chanceries with the treasury, while prisoners were held in the other three before being sent away in stages. The former chanceries now contain urban documents and objects. The prison building holds materials on courts, transports in stages, and prisoners, while uniforms, caps, and shackles lie in display cases alongside objects of urban life.

A museum display holds a prosecutor's report from eighteen ninety-five. Dmitry Popov, a craftsman from Sviyazhsk—a man who earned his living through skilled manual work—wanted the silver coin he made to pass for a genuine one. The counterfeit was discovered, and the prosecutor reported the case to the Kazan governor.

Popov was sentenced to eight years of penal labor. The punishment did not end there. The report states: “upon becoming unable to work—to settlement in Siberia forever.” When a convict could no longer work, he was transferred to permanent settlement. The eight-year term determined the duration of forced labor, but did not promise a return home.

Popov's case explains the layout of the entire museum courtyard. The complex was built in the late eighteen thirties for the institutions of Sviyazhsk Uyezd—the district governed from Sviyazhsk. The main building housed the government offices, meaning administrative and judicial chanceries, as well as the treasury. The uyezd prison occupied three buildings in the courtyard. Here officials processed cases and counted state money; behind the same facade, they held people who were to be sent away in stages.

After restoration, these buildings became home to the Museum of Sviyazhsk History. The main building contains documents and objects of urban life, while the former prison building holds materials on courts, transports in stages, and prisoners. The uniform, prisoner's cap, and shackles in the exhibition did not belong to Popov. His own trace is the report in which a counterfeit silver coin resulted in eight years of penal labor and indefinite settlement in Siberia.
